Treaty One Territory, Manitoba – Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs (AMC) Grand Chief Arlen Dumas is issuing the following statement today, to stand behind Indigenous Services Minister Marc Miller’s statements regarding recent incidents of police violence against Indigenous people.

“Today I stand with Minister Miller and express my outrage on the recent incidents of police violence towards Indigenous people from coast to coast to coast. I want to offer sincere condolences and heartfelt tribute to the family of Chantel Moore of the Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation in British Columbia, who was shot and killed by police in Edmundston, New Brunswick,” said Grand Chief Arlen Dumas. “Sadly, these shootings and aggression where First Nations people have lost their lives or are badly injured are not an anomaly. The scales of justice for First Nations in Canada continue to be broken and need to be fixed immediately.”

The AMC agrees with Minister Marc Miller in that there needs to be independent inquiries into these tragic deaths and violence.

Grand Chief Dumas said, “the AMC does not have confidence in the various police services to conduct their own investigations into these matters and therefore independent processes with First Nation involvement should be established as soon as possible,” concluded Grand Chief Dumas.
