Treaty One Territory, Winnipeg, MB – The family of Ashlee Shingoose, with the support of Grand Chief Kyra Wilson and the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs, is requesting privacy as they prepare for the special sitting of the Manitoba Court of King’s Bench scheduled for August 15, 2025.

This upcoming hearing will be an emotional and deeply personal moment for our family, as we are given the opportunity to present our victim impact statements before the Court — an opportunity that should have been granted long ago. While Ashlee was previously identified only as Mashkode Bizhiki’ikwe (Buffalo Woman), we are grateful that her identity has now been formally recognized, allowing her voice and our pain as a family to be acknowledged in a meaningful way.

We are asking all members of the media and the public to respect our privacy and give us space to grieve, reflect, and prepare for this important day. This is a time of remembrance, honour, and healing. We hope that this special hearing not only brings some measure of peace to our family but also affirms the dignity and humanity of Ashlee, who was a beloved daughter, relative, and community member of the St. Theresa Point Anisininew Nation.

We thank everyone who has supported us throughout this long and painful journey — and we extend our heartfelt gratitude to Chief Justice Glenn Joyal, to the Court, and to all those who continue to stand with the families of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirit people.

We ask for kindness, privacy, and continued prayers as we move forward together in strength and unity.

Signed,
The Family of Ashlee Shingoose
With Support from Grand Chief Kyra Wilson
