Perry Bellegarde re-elected as National Chief of the Assembly of First Nations

Unceded Territory of Musqueam, Squamish, and Tseil-Watuth Nations _ Grand Chief Arlen Dumas of the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs congratulates Perry Bellegarde of Little Black Bear First Nation in his re-election to the position of National Chief for the Assembly of First Nations.

“I’d like to congratulate National Chief Bellegarde on today’s election,” said Grand Chief Dumas.

“The five candidates running for National Chief are exceptional leaders. It was especially inspiring to have two strong women from Manitoba run for this important role. I look forward to working with the National Chief as he moves forward in this leadership role for First Nations across Canada.”

The National Chief represents the Assembly of First Nations and is based in Ottawa.

National Chief Perry Bellegarde won on the second ballot with 328 votes out of a possible 522 votes.

The other candidates who also ran were: Russ Diabo from Kahnawake, Quebec; Sheila North, Bunibonibee, Manitoba; Miles Richardson, Haida Nation, British Columbia; and Katherine Whitecloud, Wipazoka Wakpa Dakota Nation, Manitoba.
