Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs Grand Chief and Assembly of First Nations Regional Chief Election Results Announced

Treaty One Territory, Winnipeg, Manitoba – On July 13 and 14th, the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs (AMC) held its 33rd Annual General Assembly and elections in Long Plain First Nation. Today, the AMC is sharing the official election results.

For the position of AMC Grand Chief, there were two rounds of voting by MB Chiefs in attendance. The candidates for AMC Grand Chief included: Arlen DUMAS, David HARPER and Sheila NORTH.

In the first round of voting, 58 votes were cast: Arlen Dumas received 28 votes, David Harper received 8 votes and Sheila North received 22 votes. The winning candidate required 30 votes to be declared winner. To remain on the ballot, 12 votes were required. Therefore voting went to a second round and David Harper was removed from the ballots.

In the second round of voting for AMC Grand Chief, 57 votes were cast: Arlen Dumas received 38 votes and Sheila North received 19. Arlen Dumas reached the required 30 votes and was re-elected Grand Chief of the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs. His term is three years.

For the position of AFN MB Regional Chief, there were two rounds of voting by MB Chiefs in attendance. The candidates for AFN MB Regional Chief included: Karen BATSON, Cathy MERRICK, Darrell SHORTING and Cindy WOODHOUSE.

In the first round of voting, 59 votes were cast: Karen Batson received 15 votes, Cathy Merrick received 11 votes, Darrell Shorting received 7 votes and Cindy Woodhouse received 26 votes. The winning candidate required 31 votes to be declared winner. To remain on the ballot, 12 votes were required. Therefore voting went to a second round and Cathy Merrick and Darrell Shorting were removed from the ballots.

In the second round of voting for AFN MB Regional Chief, 58 votes were cast: Cindy Woodhouse received 38 votes and Karen Batson received 20. Cindy Woodhouse reached the required 31 votes and was elected AFN Manitoba Regional Chief. Her term is three years.

The election was conducted by Harold Cochrane, Q.C. of Cochrane Saxberg Barristers & Solicitors.

The Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs congratulates re-elected Grand Chief Arlen Dumas and newly elected AFN MB Regional Chief Cindy Woodhouse.
