AMC Statement in response to Indigenous Services Minister Jane Philpott’s announcement on Jordan’s Principle

TREATY ONE TERRITORY, MB _ Today, Jane Philpott, Minister of Indigenous Services announced that the Government of Canada has decided to withdraw its application for judicial review in the case before the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal regarding Jordan’s Principle.
Grand Chief Arlen Dumas of the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs states:
“This is positive news but we still have children and youth with special complex medical needs who are fighting for extended medical coverage and treatment that is not covered under the non-insured health benefits for First Nations.
Part of the problem is that there is a backlog of Status card registrations for First Nations people. This is causing a gap in services for our people.
With this latest move by the federal government, I hope we can overcome these issues and get the health care our First Nations children deserve.
The Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs will continue to address this issue through the EAGLE UrbanTransition Centre and Health Canada’s First Nation and Inuit Health Branch whom we have partnered with to create the Special Needs Patient Advocacy program.
This program supports Manitoba First Nation families and/or special needs children and youth requiring multiple services and resources without having to worry about which level of government is responsible for paying for said services and the child or youth receives the care they need.”
