Treaty One Territory, Winnipeg – The Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs (AMC) is proud to share that the search for Morgan Harris, Marcedes Myran, and Mashkode Bizhiki’ikwe (Buffalo Woman) is now entering its third phase, which includes the construction of the search facility pad and the removal of materials from the targeted zone at the Prairie Green Landfill. The AMC remains steadfast in its support of the families, nations, and communities involved, ensuring the search is carried out with dignity, respect, and in collaboration with First Nations Leadership.
“This search is about far more than recovering remains; it is about honouring the lives of Morgan Harris, Marcedes Myran, and Mashkode Bizhiki’ikwe and ensuring justice for them and their families,” said Acting Grand Chief Betsy Kennedy. “As Acting Grand Chief, I reaffirm our commitment to seeing this search through in a way that centres the families and their voices. This was the mandate of our late Grand Chief Cathy Merrick, and it is our duty to continue this heart work.”
The search, now entering its third phase, includes the construction of the search facility pad and the removal of materials from the targeted zone. The AMC has been working in partnership with the Province of Manitoba to assist with recruiting skilled search technicians, many of whom are from First Nations, to ensure the search is conducted with the utmost care and expertise.
Acting Grand Chief Kennedy added, “This process must continue to be led by the families and First Nations. It is critical that the province and all involved parties maintain their focus on supporting the families of Morgan, Marcedes, and Mashkode Bizhiki’ikwe as we move forward together.”
The Prairie Green Landfill search represents a critical step in seeking justice for missing First Nations women and addressing the ongoing crisis of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirit+ (MMIWG2S+) individuals. The AMC continues to stand with the families and advocates for the continued involvement of First Nations leadership in every stage of the search.
The Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs will provide ongoing support and ensure that the search is conducted with compassion, respect, and accountability to the families and communities affected.
