Treaty One Territory, Manitoba – The Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs (AMC) sends condolences to the family and friends of the Honourable Jim Carr, Member of Parliament for Winnipeg South Centre. Elected in 2015, Jim Carr was in his third term as a Member of Parliament.

In a statement by the MP’s family, they shared that he had passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his family and loved ones at the age of 71. His passing was shared with the House of Commons by fellow Winnipeg MP Kevin Lamoureux.

The Honourable Jim Carr has been a partner to many First Nations in Manitoba for many years. His visions aligned with the AMC in that he had an invested interest in advancing our shared priorities across our Treaty regions for the benefit of all Canadians. Minister Carr was never afraid to have candid discussions on First Nation issues and counted us as important members of the prairie region for which he had a deep passion for protecting.

The partnerships we have engaged in with Minister Carr have been fruitful, including the transition of the Hudson Bay Railway from American to Indigenous ownership. We are grateful for your service to the Prairie Region and your partnerships with Manitoba First Nations over the years.
