Treaty One Territory, Winnipeg, MB – The Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs (AMC) is disappointed by the Prime Minister’s announcement today of a new Indigenous Advisory Council to guide federal efforts on major infrastructure and economic projects.
“While we acknowledge the First Nations leaders who have been appointed, the Government of Canada is once again moving forward without respecting the voices, jurisdiction, and decision-making authority of First Nations in Manitoba,” said AMC Grand Chief Kyra Wilson. “Not one First Nations leader was even considered. This is not inclusion – it is exclusion. First Nations in Manitoba must determine for themselves how they will be engaged, not through a federally appointed body designed in Ottawa.”
While Canada speaks of equity ownership and resource management, the exclusion of Manitoba First Nations from this Council demonstrates a continuing pattern of disregard for Treaty rights and First Nations jurisdiction in this region. “These are nation-building projects that will affect our lands, our waters, and our future generations,” said Grand Chief Wilson. “They cannot advance on the basis of advisory councils crafted in Ottawa.”
The AMC wants to make it clear: First Nations in Manitoba will determine their own place in these processes. First Nations leadership, and their respective Nations, will decide on how they will engage in these major projects and give direction. The federal government must come to the table with respect for our AMC Member Nations and engage with them accordingly.
