Treaty One Territory – Winnipeg, Manitoba _ The Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs (AMC) offers its sincere congratulations and support for the Chiefs of the Treaty 1 Development Corporation on the historic signing of the transfer of Kapyong Barracks to Treaty 1 First Nations.
Chiefs of the Brokenhead Ojibway Nation, Sagkeeng First Nation, Long Plain First Nation, Peguis First Nation, Roseau River First Nation, Sandy Bay Ojibway First and Swan Lake First Nation, and the federal government held a signing ceremony at Assiniboia Downs today after reaching a settlement agreement for the 64-hectare site west of Kenaston Boulevard at Grant Avenue in Winnipeg.
AMC Grand Chief Arlen Dumas said, “This has been a historic day for Treaty 1 Nations. After 17 years of negotiations and hard work by our leadership, it has finally come to fruition. The return of our lands is long overdue. When our Nations are successful in reclaiming our territory, it is significant and must be celebrated. We stand with the Treaty 1 Nations in their accomplishment and send our congratulations on this monumental day.”
