Treaty One Territory, Manitoba – The Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs (AMC) congratulates Prime Minister Mark Carney on being sworn in today as Canada’s 24th Prime Minister by Governor General Mary Simon.

AMC extends its gratitude to outgoing Ministers for their service and welcomes the newly appointed Cabinet. We acknowledge Minister Gary Anandasangaree as he assumes the critical role of Minister of Justice, a position with significant implications for First Nations justice. We also congratulate Terry Duguid on his appointment as Minister of Environment and Climate Change, recognizing the importance of strong leadership in addressing the climate crisis and protecting lands and waters for future generations.

However, AMC is deeply disappointed by the reappointment of MP Patty Hajdu as Minister of Indigenous Services, given her department’s mishandling of Jordan’s Principle and its refusal to engage meaningfully with First Nations leadership on unilateral changes to this essential program.

AMC is further concerned by the elimination of critical cabinet portfolios, including Women and Gender Equality, Mental Health, and others that have provided an important platform for addressing inequities that disproportionately impact First Nations. The dissolution of the Minister for Women and Gender Equality, in particular, is a step backwards in advancing the safety, rights, and well-being of Indigenous women, girls, and 2SLGBTQQIA+ people—many of whom continue to be at risk due to gender-based violence, systemic barriers, and ongoing failures to implement the Calls for Justice from the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG).

As Canada moves forward, particularly with an election very likely to be called, AMC urges Prime Minister Carney—should he be successful in forming the next government—to reinstate these critical cabinet positions to ensure the voices of First Nations women, youth, and marginalized groups are meaningfully represented.

AMC remains steadfast in its commitment to upholding First Nations rights, advancing reconciliation, and addressing urgent priorities for First Nations in Manitoba, including ensuring the proper implementation of Jordan’s Principle and advocating for the safety and dignity of our women, girls, and 2SLGBTQQIA+ relatives.
