Treaty One Territory, Manitoba – The Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs (AMC) extends congratulations to Mark Carney on winning the leadership of the Liberal Party of Canada. The AMC acknowledges and thanks all candidates who put their names forward in this race, including Chrystia Freeland, Karina Gould, and Frank Baylis for their commitment to serving Canadians.
As Canada prepares for a new political chapter, the AMC also expresses gratitude to outgoing Prime Minister Justin Trudeau for his leadership and his efforts in strengthening the relationship between First Nations and the Government of Canada. Under his tenure, we witnessed significant commitments to reconciliation, including investments in housing and infrastructure, legislative advancements on First Nations child welfare, and the establishment of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. While much work remains, we recognize his role in advancing these important conversations.
The AMC looks forward to meeting with Mark Carney to discuss the Liberal Party of Canada’s campaign platform and, most importantly, how his leadership will ensure the full implementation of Treaties in Manitoba. First Nations have long called for meaningful action on Treaty rights, economic reconciliation, and self-determination.
As the political landscape shifts, the AMC remains steadfast in its advocacy for the rights and priorities of First Nations in Manitoba.
