Treaty One Territory, Manitoba – The Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs (AMC) issues this statement today to mark the start of 2SLGBTQIA+ Pride Month. This commemorative month recognizes the impacts two-spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, queer, trans, and intersex individuals have had and continue to have across Turtle Island and worldwide.

Since time immemorial, our nations have honoured those who are gender diverse as sacred and important to every nation. But unfortunately, due to colonization and imposed ideas of gender binaries, two-spirited peoples are subject to high rates of violence and discrimination. The violence and discrimination against First Nations must stop.

Acting Grand Chief Cornell McLean said, “At AMC, we celebrate the accomplishments of 2SLGBTQIA+ people and continue the fight for their fundamental rights to be who they are and love who they love without fear of persecution.”

During 2SLGBTQIA+ month, AMC encourages First Nations citizens to become educated on the history of 2SLGBTQIA+ people and learn about the power and significance of allyship. We invite everyone across Turtle Island to be a supporter, a friend, and a celebrator of diversity.

There are many ways to become a great ally to friends, loved ones, colleagues, and even strangers in the 2SLGBTQIA+ community. Be open to learning, confront your prejudices and unconscious biases, dive into history, and tell someone in the community that you love and support them exactly as they are.

“This month, let us celebrate the 2SLGBTQIA+ community and commit to continue taking action to create a more inclusive and equitable future for everyone,” said Acting Grand Chief Cornell McLean.
