Treaty One Territory, Manitoba –Today, The Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs (AMC) Executive Council of Chiefs (ECC) met to further address the leadership transition following the recent passing of Grand Chief Cathy Merrick. This morning, the ECC passed a motion appointing Chief Betsy Kennedy as the Acting Grand Chief of the AMC until a new election can be scheduled to elect a permanent Grand Chief.
Chief Betsy Kennedy, a well-respected Leader of War Lake First Nation and Co-Chair of the AMC Women’s Council, previously assumed the role of Spokesperson during the period of mourning. With this new appointment, Chief Kennedy will now serve as Acting Grand Chief, ensuring that the voice and priorities of the AMC continue to be represented and advanced during this interim period.
The ECC recognizes the importance of maintaining stability and continuity in leadership for the AMC and the First Nations it represents. Chief Kennedy’s experience and commitment to the mandates of the AMC position her as a capable leader during this transitional period.
Further details regarding the election process will be shared with the Chiefs and the wider community in the coming weeks.
