Treaty One Territory, Manitoba – Grand Chief Arlen Dumas and the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs (AMC) would like to acknowledge the important work of Elizabeth May following her announcement to step down as party leader.
Federal Green Party Leader Elizabeth May made the announcement that she is stepping down as party leader, effective today.
“I would like to acknowledge the important work of Elizabeth May during her tenure as Green Party Leader,” said AMC Grand Chief Arlen Dumas. “She has made important headway in addressing First Nations and environmental issues. She has done this by consistently challenging the government on First Nations matters and ensuring environmental concerns remain at the forefront of the Green Party platform. This has been seen in her repudiation of the doctrine of terra nullius, her call to end the genocide of Indigenous women, girls and two spirited people, and her acknowledgements of Canada’s profound legal obligation for reconciliation and restitution for Canada’s history of colonization. She has been instrumental in drawing attending to First Nations jurisdiction issues with her support of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) and her support for First Nations efforts toward self-determination including the dismantling of the Indian Act.”
