Message from Grand Chief Kyra Wilson

Seasons Greetings,

As we gather tonight for Jingle Mingle, I want to begin by acknowledging the heart and strength of our 63 First Nations. This year has brought moments of challenge, moments of healing, and moments of incredible leadership from our Elders, our Youth, our Chiefs and Councils, and every community member who carries the work forward each day.

During this season, when families come together and we reflect on all that we have walked through, I am reminded of how deeply connected we truly are. The work we do is never just policy or process.  It is people, stories, and the future we are building for the generations who follow.

Tonight is a celebration of that spirit. It’s a chance to honour the achievements across our province, to recognize the hard lifts and quiet victories, and to take a moment to breathe together as one. I am grateful for each of you. For your commitment, your courage, and your compassion.

May this evening bring warmth, laughter, and a renewed sense of purpose as we move into 2026. From my heart to yours, I wish you all a safe, joyful, and peaceful holiday season.

Leo Cholakis – Kensington Building

275 Portage Avenue (known as the Kensington Block) was constructed between 1973 and 1974, based on a design by architect Jack M. Ross. The structure replaced a previously existing building built in 1905 and destroyed by fire.

Faced with the problem of designing such a tall building on such a small lot, Jack M. Ross approached the city to seek permission for an encroachment on the Smith Street side, meaning that the building’s second level would expand over the traditional property line, creating an overhang for the pedestrian sidewalk.

Fairly innovative in Winnipeg for the period, 275 Portage Avenue is an unusual high-rise building for Winnipeg, as it maximizes its’ very narrow lot.

Who is Shelly?

Born in 1932, Shelly Kanfer was our bookkeeper, friend, then family. After the passing of her husband in 2017, Shelly became our roommate, and her presence enriched our lives in countless ways.  Shelly played a crucial role in helping us navigate challenges, guiding us to overcome obstacles and to be here. Her support and expertise have been invaluable on our journey. Today, we honor her love of food by naming our bistro after her, celebrating the support and encouragement she continues to provide us with every day.

Waisman Ross was founded in 1953 by Allan Waisman and Jack Ross, both recent University of Manitoba graduates, with Jack achieving his Master’s degree at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Both men were passionate architects and very active in their community.

The practice was quickly a success.

Blankstein Coop Gillmore Hanna started a 1956 partnership between University of Manitoba and Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) graduates Morley Blankstein and Isadore Coop. The two were joined by University of Manitoba and MIT graduates Alan Hanna and Doug Gillmor in 1959.

These two award-winning, community-minded architectural practices merged in 1964. At the time few, if any, architectural firms in Canada had a moniker that did not pay homage to a founding practitioner in the firm.  The move away from this was intentional.

Our founders realized that we are better working under one banner with a common purpose and collective ethos.  The strength of Number TEN became the power of the whole organization and its talented people.

The new name was inspired by the firm’s address at the time, 10 Donald Street, a unique modernist design by Waisman and Ross.

The Winnipeg Airports Authority (WAA) is a community-based, non-profit corporation managing Winnipeg Richardson International Airport (YWG), focused on connecting Manitoba to the world through safe, efficient operations, sustainability, and positive community impact, reinvesting profits back into airport development and services. Winnipeg Airports Authority was established in 1992 to explore the feasibility of community ownership of Winnipeg International Airport. A Memorandum of Understanding was signed in 1993, providing the framework for discussions and negotiations with Transport Canada. On January 1, 1997, the transfer of Winnipeg International Airport from Transport Canada to the community-based WAA became official. Plans for upgrades and renewals began immediately. In 2004, WAA announced the building of a new terminal, a parkade, roadway system, and airside infrastructure. Prior to construction, Winnipeg International Airport was renamed Winnipeg James Armstrong Richardson International Airport at a ceremony on December 10, 2006 to honour the founder of Western Canada Airways.

The new terminal, designed by renowned architect César Pelli features soaring ceilings, universally designed principles, panoramic windows, and natural elements to create a sense of space, openness, and connection.

These challenges collectively hindered First Nations entrepreneurs and communities in Manitoba from achieving economic self-sufficiency and prosperity. The need for an intermediary to fill this socioeconomic gap was evident, which prompted the AMC and the Province of Manitoba to engage in discussions and deliberation on a potential solution, and the intuitive idea was born.
