Treaty One Territory, Manitoba –The Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs (AMC) wishes all First Nation students going back to school a wonderful 2022-23 academic year. With more lenient pandemic restrictions, this school year will mark a return to normalcy for many First Nation students.

“This may be the first time in recent history where almost all children and youth are unequivocally happy about returning to school after the summer break,” said Deputy Grand Chief Cornell McLean. “For many young students, this week marks their first-time attending classes in person, and for older students, a first time attending in person at a post-secondary institution. Many students have spent one to two full years learning virtually, and our hope is for students to receive the true campus experience that myself and many students before them remember fondly.”

The AMC applauds all the hard work and dedication of our First Nation educators who have continued to show up for children and youth despite the difficulties of a global pandemic. We honour and recognize the hurdles the pandemic put on our educators, admin support, and parents. We wish all First Nation students and educators well as they begin a new year, a cautious return to normalcy, and look forward to celebrating their successes when they graduate.
