Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs Welcomes the Nomination of Chief Justice Glenn D. Joyal to the Supreme Court of Canada

Treaty One Territory, Winnipeg, MB (June 23, 2026) — Grand Chief Kyra Wilson, on behalf of the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs (AMC), welcomes the nomination of the Honourable Chief Justice Glenn D. Joyal to the Supreme Court of Canada.
“The Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs offers its sincere congratulations to Chief Justice Joyal on this important appointment,” said Grand Chief Wilson. “For many years, he has demonstrated that the administration of justice is strengthened when courts are prepared to listen, to learn, and to build respectful relationships with First Nations.”
Throughout his time as Chief Justice of the Court of King’s Bench of Manitoba, Chief Justice Joyal fostered meaningful dialogue with First Nations leadership and supported efforts to strengthen understanding between the judiciary and First Nations. AMC particularly acknowledges his leadership in welcoming the Supreme Court of Canada to Winnipeg, creating opportunities for meaningful engagement with First Nations leaders and communities. Those efforts reflected an understanding that reconciliation must be informed by relationships, not simply institutions.
“The decisions of the Supreme Court of Canada continue to shape the lives of First Nations peoples and the interpretation of the Treaties, the Constitution, and the honour of the Crown,” Grand Chief Wilson said. “It is essential that those entrusted with this responsibility appreciate both the law and the lived realities of the peoples it serves.”
The Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs has valued its relationship with Chief Justice Joyal and has always found him to be thoughtful, respectful, and committed to ensuring greater access to justice for all Manitobans.
“We wholeheartedly endorse Chief Justice Joyal’s nomination,” Grand Chief Wilson concluded. “We are confident he will bring fairness, wisdom, and humility to Canada’s highest court. We wish him every success as he undertakes this important responsibility in service to the people of this country.”
