Treaty One Territory, Winnipeg, MB – The Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs (AMC) welcomes the election of Prime Minister Mark Carney and the next government of Canada.

“First Nations in Manitoba have been clear about what is needed to move forward in a spirit of true reconciliation and respect for inherent rights, Treaty rights and First Nations jurisdiction,” said Grand Chief Wilson. “We look forward to meeting with Prime Minister Carney and his Cabinet at the earliest opportunity to set a clear path for action on our shared priorities.”

As the political voice of First Nations in Manitoba, we at the AMC would also like to congratulate the First Nations Members of Parliament elected in Manitoba: Leah Gazan in Winnipeg Centre and Rebecca Chartrand in Churchill-Keewatinook Aski. Their leadership reflects the strength of our Nations and we look forward to working with them to advance the priorities of First Nations in Manitoba.

The relationship between First Nations and Canada is defined by the Treaties, a legal and constitutional relationship of mutual recognition and shared obligations. We are prepared to advance the commitments made in the Liberal Party platform that include the full implementation of the Treaties and the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP). This work must include regional budgets, clear processes and firm timelines to deliver measurable progress for First Nations in Manitoba during this term.

We acknowledge every First Nations citizen who voted; your voices helped shape this outcome and strengthened our collective position.

The AMC will continue to act on the direction of First Nations leadership and remains committed to ensuring that the voices of First Nations are heard, respected and centred in the decisions that shape our relationship with Canada.
