Treaty One Territory, Manitoba – The Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs (AMC) issues this statement to acknowledge and congratulate former deputy premier, Kelvin Geortzen, as the new Premier of Manitoba. The PC caucus voted for Mr. Geortzen to serve as Premier until a permanent PC leader and Premier is selected October 30th.
Grand Chief Arlen Dumas stated, ”I appreciated the phone call I received today from the new Manitoba Premier. It was a positive start to his term and an opportunity to help reset the relationship with the AMC member First Nations. There were many challenges we faced as First Nations under the previous Premier. I am hopeful that with the new Premier, and with the leadership process underway within the PC caucus, that this will result in meaningful consultations with First Nations on all matters that impact their rights and well-being.
“I am also pleased that Premier Geortzen has decided to not move forward on several of the problematic bills for First Nations, including Bill 64, during the fall sitting of the legislative assembly. This is a positive start and I look forward to further discussions with the Premier on a range of issue over the next several weeks,” concluded Grand Chief Dumas.
