The Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs (AMC) seeks to fill five (5) full-time Five Nations Family Law Coordinator positions, one from each Nation/language group. Reporting directly to the AMC Senior Policy Analyst, the Five Nations Family Law Coordinator will work under the direction of the AMC Steering Committee to develop adaptable templates for traditional family laws within our five Nations, the Anishinaabeg, Anishininiwak, Dakota Oyate, Densuiline and Nehethwuk/Inninwak. The family law aspect of this project focuses on collecting and analyzing information on how our five Nation members manage family and child matters. Traditional Indigenous family law is premised on stories and historical accounts; the Five Nations Family Law Coordinator will translate the values into family law principles. Additionally, each of the five positions will contribute to the process of drafting federal legislation to support and protect Manitoba First Nations inherent jurisdiction over children and families.

DUTIES

 Coordinate community engagement to gather traditional family law knowledge through various methods such as surveys and face-to-face interviews;

 Draw Indigenous family law principles from data gathered; and

 Develop adaptable template laws for each Nation.

QUALIFICATIONS

 Social science degree with a minimum of 2-3 years’ experience working in child welfare;

 Knowledge of First Nation issues related to the Child and Family Services system;

 Strong written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills;

 Strong problem solving, organizational and critical thinking skills;

 Strong research skills with experience in Indigenous research methods;

 Experience working with First Nations and in First Nation communities;

 A valid driver’s license, reliable vehicle and ability to travel;

 Knowledge of Indigenous cultural practices; and

 Fluency in one of the five Manitoba First Nations language groups is an asset.
