A Message from:
The Grand Chief of
the
Assembly of
Manitoba Chiefs
Tansi, welcome to the new Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs web site. I welcome the opportunity to share some of the exciting initiatives happening as directed by Chiefs in Assembly this past year.
The Common Election Day project is moving steadily forward. This proposed change will establish a common election, four year terms and a Chief electoral office for the 37 First Nations under section 74 of the Indian Act. The initiative involved meeting with Chiefs and Councils, meeting with community members to discuss changes to the electoral provisions of the Indian Act and we are now submitting our report to Minister Strahl and determining next steps.
AMC established necessary partnerships with provincial health departments during the H1N1 crisis to deliver much needed personal home medical supplies to the citizens of our communities.
We worked with Manitoba Justice which led to changes in the Police Act where the police will no longer be investigating themselves --- a recommendation of the AJI that has finallycome to fruition 20 years later.
We also advocated very hard with the federal government to create awareness on human trafficking in Canada which is mostly affecting our First Nation women and children. We are continuing to fight this heinous practice.
These are just some of the many activities of the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs in the past year. I look forward in the next year to continuing to work together with the 64 Chiefs in Assembly to create a better life for our people.
Ekosani,
Grand Chief Ron Evans
